Hybrid Management - Part 05 - Individual mailbox moves via the console
In this tutorial we will migrate an individual mailbox via the EAC. Moving single mailboxes is really quite simple to perform. As you can see below, we currently have 12 user mailboxes plus the Administrator mailbox. As no mailboxes currently exist in Exchange Online, Local Exchange EAC displays these mailboxes as - Mailbox Type - User.
In the Exchange Online EAC these Exchange Local Mailboxes are displayed as Contacts. The contact view also shows the Room, Equipment and Shared Mailboxes as contacts.
The Exchange Online EAC currently only shows two Cloud Mailboxes - both of them are Admins.
Before migration, set a region and assign a license to the user that is being moved.
User StatusLog in to the Office 365 Portal and view the Users that appear. Notice there are several different Status variations. Accounts that have a license assigned show the license that is assigned to them.
Equipment, Shared and Room accounts show as Blocked. Users that have been synched to the Cloud but are not assigned a license yet appear as Unlicensed.
Assign a license
Before we migrate a user mailbox, it needs to be assigned a license and region to be able to create the mailbox in Office 365. As I will be migrating user.101 - select that user.
In the User section - Go to the Product Licenses section - Click Edit.
The Product Licenses section will appear.
In the Product Licenses section, Click the drop down arrow and select the count of location for the user. Note that this cannot be changed once the user is licensed.
Edit the licensing options if needed while in the licensing section. Remember that if you remove the applications as part of the license, it will remove the application / software for the end user.
Scroll down and save.
Exit back to the User section.
Refresh and notice that user.101 now has a license assigned.

Moving a single mailbox via the EAC
To move a single mailbox from on-premises Exchange to Exchange Online -
--- Log into the Office 365 portal - Exchange Admin Console
Recipients - Migration -
+ - drop down - Select Migrate to Exchange Online
As this is a Hybid configuration, select Remote Move Migration -
Select the user(s) you want to move - + -
Select the user(s) - Add - OK
Once populated - select Next
Enter credentials for an account with Exchange On-Premises admin and password. - Next
Create the Migration Endpoint -
Enter the FQDN of the on-premises Exchange server
Enter the batch details - Next
Edit the migration batch configuration as needed -
Then click - New - to create the batch.
The batch will auto start if you have configured it that way.
The migration section of Exchange Online will show the batches and progress
Click - View Details - to see details of the batch progress.
Once completed, it will look like this -
Once completed, check Exchange on-premise and you will see that it is now an Office 365 mailbox
Log in to the Exchange Online EAC to confirm the following -
EAC - Recipients - Mailboxes - The migrated user now appears as a Mailbox - User - in the Exchange Online EAC.
You will also notice that the mailbox no longer appears as a Contact in Exchange Online as it has now been migrated as a mailbox.
Congratulations -
You have now successfully migrated a mailbox to Exchange Online via the EAC console.
